myth for sunflower
There were gods before these and gods before them. And there will be gods after these. And maybe, in one way or another, they’re all the same gods. Humans are only just learning the truth about all of this. So the gods all lived in the sky and they didn’t bother themselves with the earth. They trusted the rocks, water, wind, and, of course, the sun to tend to the earth.
Like seemed to continue without much disturbance for many generations. it’s for this reason that the gods went on a journey to another dimension and took the sun with them, because the light the sun gives is full of love, even when it is harsh. And where they were going they needed a light whose center is love. So the world was left without sun and no one knew how to manage. Some learned to harvest the light of the stars but that was as easy as filling an empty sea with a single river. And even though fire could be used to warm and light and cook, fire was slowly destroying the forests, and forest doesn’t have that special morning light that grows new seeds.
But al of this storing of starlight and fire making, was not enough for life to thrive all together. There was a feeling of scarcity that gripped the world. But at that time there were rivers of light running beneath the ground. that only the smallest mite knew about because these streams were so very thin. Because the mites were so small it took some time for their message to get to the larger animals. So the moles and voles went deep into the earth and passed the threads of light to the spiders who wove rays. And in the center for the threads the spiders made a basket so that the rivers of light could be directed to the rays. Up came the threads from the earth, and to rise them up the creatures with wings and paws put feathers and fur into clay to keep the rivers warm. The wind and water came to embrace this new being and give it life. Finally, the humans, with their storytelling ability, they named it a plant: a sunflower.
And the sunflower grew in many soils and it made seeds with golden threads embedded in it. It made food, and medicine, and shone and little light all over the world. And when the sun came back, like she always does, she took this little plant up with her, and the plant taught her about roots. This is why all plants grow with the sun. They are linked to her. And the sun, well, she’s rooted in us too. So when we see a sunflower, we know there will always be enough.
